Abstract

Benzocycloheptene derivs. of formula (I) and their addn. salts with mineral or organic acid are new. (X=H or halo, other than F, at the 2 or 4 posn. Y and Z are both H or together form a double bond. R=H, 1-5C alkyl or phenyl, opt. substd. by F, Cl, CH3 or CH3O. R1=H, 1-5C alkyl or 2-5C alkenyl. R2=1-5C alkyl or 2-5C alkenyl, or NR1R2 is a satd. heterocycle with 4-6C, opt. contg. an additional heteroatom and opt. substd. by a 1-5C alkyl). Also new are intermediates of formula (II) (P and Q are together oxo, or P is R and Q is OH). (I) are antidepressants generally given at 10-300 mg/day, orally. A specifically claimed cpd., 7-dimethylamino-6,7-dihydro-5H-benzocycloheptene, was prepd. (as the hydrochloride) by elimination of H2O from the 5-hydroxy-6,7,8,9-tetrahydro cpd. using H2SO4 in dioxan.
