Abstract
New spermine derivs. are of formula (I): R'NH-(-CH2)3-NH-CR2R3-(CH2)2-CR4R5-NH-(CH2)3NHR6 (where R' and R6 are 6-15C alkyl; R2-5 are H, or CR2R3 and/or CR4R5 is/are -CO-). (I) and their salts with acceptable acids are good to excellent antimicrobials with mic's against Staph. aureus (ATCC 6538p), E. coli 9637 and Ps. aeruginosa of the same orders of magnitude (variously) as chloramphenicol, gentamycin, neomycin and penicillin. They are not absorbed in the gastrointestinal tract and by oral or rectal admin. can be used to treat intestinal infections. (I) may also be used as disinfectants for localised use. A claimed cpd. is N1, N4-di-n-hexyl-spermine.
