Abstract

New benzofuran derivs are of formula (I) where either (1) A is COOH, or an ester, amide, acid halide or salt thereof; B is H; X is F, Cl, lower alkyl or lower alkoxy; Y is F, Cl, Me or MeO, m and n are 0, 1 or 2; (2) A is H; B is COOH or a salt thereof; and X, Y, m and n are as defined in (1); or (3) A is H; B is CH2COOH, or an ester or salt thereof; X is halogen, lower alkyl, lower alkoxy or CF3; Y is halogen, Me or MeO; m and n are 0, 1 or 2. Cpds. (I) have antibacterial activity against Gram-positive and -negative bacteria, and some also have antifungal and antiprotozoal activity. They can be used as oral or topical medicaments, animal feed additives and disinfectants. A typical cpd is 2-nitro-3-phenyl-7-benzofurancarboxylic acid. In an example this is prepd. by reacting the 2-bromo-cpd. with HNO3 and NaNO2 in acetic acid.
