Abstract

The self-locking screw (10) is provided with a blind hole (12) at the end of the shank. Two diametrically opposite longitudinal slots (14,16) are cut in the wall of the hole (12) and extended to the bottom of the hole. Two diametrically opposite flats (18) are milled to a depth sufficient to remove the thread completely along the lines of the slots. The slots are forced open so that the end of the shank is permanently deformed. When the screw is screwed into a nut or a tapped hole a radial force is exerted on the thread which locks the screw. A chamfer (22) on the end of the shank facilitates the entry of the screw into the tapped hole or nut.
