Abstract

The focussing system contains a concave cathode (14) and an intermediate anode (16), spaced from the cathode, and having plane surfaces and a perforation (20). The focussing system anode (18) is mounted at the intermediate anode side away from the cathode, the second anode being also flat. Pref. the cathode is partly spherical so that its concave surface faces the intermediate anode. The three electrodes are so designed that, on application of suitable potential differences, curved equipotential surfaces are produced between the cathode and the intermediate anode, but flat equipotential surfaces between the intermediate anode and the anode proper. The perforation of the intermediate anode may be circular and concentric to the cathode.
