Abstract

Large parts made of refractory alloys are plastically deformed by placing the part in an sheath of thickness >0.5 mm, the sheath having a lower resistance hot plastic deformation than the part, and plastically deforming the alloy in the heated state. The sheath is subsequently removed. Refractory alloys normally difficult to hot work are shaped into tubes, wires, bars, etc. The composite part/sheath is easier to deform than the part on its own. The sheath retains the heat ensuring that the part is practically at a uniform temp. Defects in the refractory alloy are avoided. In the case of drawing the sheath transmits the pressure to the part and the process is almost hydrostatic.
