Abstract

Isomerisation of hydrocarbon feeds is carried out using an Al2O3 catalyst contg. 0.01-5 (pref. 0.1-2) wt.% Si. The process is esp. useful for isomerising cyclic olefins (e.g. cyclohexene to methylcyclopentenes) and aromatics (e.g. ethylbenzene to xylenes). The catalysts give higher conversions than Si-free catalysts. In the case of xylene formation, the proportion of p-xylene is also higher. The Al2O3 pref. has a specific surface of >15 m.2/g. and a pore vol. of >0.1 cm.3/g. The catalysts pref. also contain 0.01-3 wt.% of a halogen (esp. Cl).
