Abstract

A radioactive effluent contg. some ruthenium is decontanimated by forming a ppte. of cobalt sulphide in the effluent, which has absorbing and/or coprecipitating properties w.r.t. the radioactive elements present in the effluent. The process gives improved removal of ruthenium, e.g. from effluents resulting from the treatment of nuclear fuels. Pref. the effluent is subjected to reduction, e.g. with hydrazine (salt) before forming the Co sulphide ppte. Pref. pptes. of Na ferricyanide and BaSO4 are also formed in the effluent to improve removal of other radioactive elements such as Sr, Cs and Sb.
