Abstract

A chasis for cars holds a rigid passenger compartment (46). It is mounted between front and rear chassis elements (50), either or both of which carry the engine and transmission of the car, and an elongate member (571) is arranged between front and rear wheels (71), at each side of the car, so that shock forces are transmitted from the front to the rear wheels, and vice-versa. The front element (50) supports the shock absorbers (72), front drive, and the engine, and forms a triangular prism which tilts on frontal impact. The rear element (51) is similar. The elements (50, 51) are connected by energy absorbers to the compartment (46). The elongate members (571) are interconnected by transverse members (573) and connected by struts (581) to the compartment (46). The elongate members (571) are pre-stressed tubes, pref. comprising a compression-resistant inner, and a tension-resistant outer.
