Abstract
The guard for the air inlet of a jet engine (M) is intended to prevent damage to the engine by birds when the aircraft takes off and lands. The guard consists of a number of metal or plastic rods (4) either straight or slightly curved which are mounted on a ring fixed around the engine air intake. The rods converge to a point (3) and are supported by intermediate rings. The guard can be so mounted that it can be detached and jettisoned after take-off. Alternatively the rods can be made of spring steel and retracted axially into the casing of the engine.
