Abstract
1,024,894. Aircraft power plant. VICKERSARMSTBONG (AIRCRAFT) Ltd. May 7, 1964 [May 16, 1963], No. 19545/63. Heading B7G. An aircraft jet-propulsion engine installation comprises a central engine 12 (Fig. 2, not shown), buried in the tail end of the fuselage and two outboard engines 13, 14 respectively mounted in nacelles or pods attached to the opposite sides of the fuselage 10 laterally of said central engine, each of said engines being a by-pass gas turbine unit having at its after end a supplementary turbo fan unit 127, 137, 147 respectively and an annular cowl 125, 135, 145 surrounding the respective turbo-fan unit and arranged to receive boundary layer air from surfaces lying ahead thereof, the rotor of each turbo-fan unit being furnished with fan-blades which extend into, and or rotating, sweep the interior of its respective cowl to ingest said boundary layer air therein. The fairing for the central turbo-fan 127 may have an additional air entry duct and the outboard engines may have thrust reversing units 134, 144. The jet nozzles 123, 133, 143 may have elliptical profiles and transverse extensible rods, whereby the profiles may be altered in shape. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 974,384.
