Abstract
The hydraulic power transmission for a railway locomotive has an engine (1) driving a pump (3) which supplies two gear pumps (7a, 7b). the gear pumps are connected to each other so that they run at the same speed. The hydraulic fluid from each gear pump (7a, 7b) flows to a group of three gear pumps (9, 9') with each pump connected to a single wheel. If, for example, the wheel (12a) begins to spin there is a pressure drop in the line (10a). This causes an increase in the pressure difference across the gear pump (9a) which then acts as a motor and drives the other two gear pumps (9). The principle can be applied equally well to road vehicles.
