Abstract

The optical scanning equipment for examining strip material consists of a laser light source and rotating multiplier mirror. The rotating mirror causes the laser beam to be deflected over the complete width of the band of material under investigation. The scanning beam passes through an angled clear glass screen and light reflected from the material passes to photomultiplier detectors. The beam is partially reflected by the transparent screen onto a grating. Light passing through the grating falls onto a detector whose pulse output is used to encode the position of the scanning beam across the width of the material.
