Abstract
1519323 Strip width measurement BETRIEBSFORSCHUNGSINSTITUT VDEH - INSTITUT FUR ANGEWANDTE FORSCHUNG GmbH 25 Sept 1975 [26 Sept 1974] 39254/75 Heading G1A Apparatus for strip width measurement comprises means 8 to scan strip 1 with a focused light beam and a grating 11 of alternate opaque, 12, and transparent portions on to which lens 10 focuses the reflected beam such that it scans it transversely, means 13 to produce pulses in accordance with the resulting modulations of the beam, and evaluation means 14 giving an output signal dependent on the number of pulses in each scan. Via prism 5 and lens system 6, 7 a line image 0À5 mm wide is provided from a wider beam from laser 4, and made by revolving mirror system 8 to scan the strip width. The grating line spacings and widths are equal. Pulses from photo-multiplier 13 pass to electronic module 14 and indicator 15. The strip width = (a/f-1) g.n., where a is the distance from strip 1 to lens 10 of focal length f, g the centre to centre grating line spacing and n the number of pulses per scan. In the embodiment of Fig. 2 (not shown), two gratings with detectors and at different distances from the strip are used to correct for alteration of the strip/grating distance. The correct strip width is given approximately by b 2 -(b 1 -b 2 ) a/c, where b 1 and b2 are the apparent strip width values obtained at distances a and c respectively.
