Abstract

The ball valve has a spherical section with stub shafts (26) running in needle roller bearings. A sealing ring mounted in a sleeve (36) is normally pressed against the spherical surface (21) by a helical coil spring. The spring load is transmitted through a pair of rings (34, 35) held apart by diaphragm springs. A pair of cams mounted on the valve stub shafts actuate short push rods (42') which pass through slots in the ring (35). As the valve ball is rotated from the closed position the spring (40) is compressed and the load on the seal is removed. This reduces the operating friction and the wear on the seals.
