Abstract

The seal may be used on a revolving shaft (22) at the point of entry or exit from an engine housing (23). It is suited to situations with no appreciable pressure differential. It incorporates a sealing ring (24) of expanded graphite which has been subjected to a re-compression. The ring (24) makes a sliding friction contact with either the shaft (22) barrel or with a radial surface of the housing wall, mounted on an elastic metal component which completes the seal. It may use a square section graphite ring (24) which is a friction fit on the shaft (22), using a sleeve form leaf spring (26) to mount a ring shoe (25) in a retaining sleeve (27). The sleeve is a tight fit in a housing wall bore (28), and it may use springs to put the graphite (24) in a state of permanent lateral compression.
