Abstract

Foundry coke is pretreated before its use in a cupola. The novelty is that each piece of coke is coated with a noncombustible material consisting mainly of slag directly obtd. from the cupola, the slag having a m.pt. >1000 degrees C and pref. 1300-1400 degrees C. The coke is pref. circulated through a molten bath of slag. and may be sprayed with a wetting agent before entering the bath, which may contain a prod. altering its viscosity and improving the coating of the coke with slag. The pref. pretreatment plant consists of a heated U-shaped vessel contg. molten slag and located near the cupola; the coke is fed into the slag and a conveyor used to remove the coated coke from the top of one leg of the "U". The use of coke in a supola is inefficient because of the high proportion of CO in the gas leaving the cupola throat. By coating the coke with slag which does not mealt until 1300-1400 degrees C., the oxidn. of the coke is delayed in the upper part of the supola.
