Abstract
Electrical insulating oils consist of satd. hydrocarbon oils with burning point >200 degrees C, based on (a) linear or branched aliphatic oils, and/or (b) naphthenic oils, with (c) usual additives. Used in transformers, condensers, circuit-breakers, switches, etc. at ambient temps. of 0-40 degrees C. Oils are much less flammable and liable to explode as a result of electrical faults, than usual mineral transformer oils. They are biodegradable, relatively cheap and free from the environmental hazards of polychlorinated biphenyls. Pref. the oils have mol. wts. of 500-700. (a) pref. has API density 28.8 degrees, flash pt. around 296 degrees C and burning pt. around 321 degrees C. (b) pref. has mol. wt. 600, API density 14.8 degrees, flash pt. around 204 degress C and burning pt. around 237 degrees C.
