Abstract

The folding step ladders have two forward converging stanchions (1) spanned by horizontal steps (2). Two rearward stanchions (3) also converge and are braced by inclined members (4). The two sets of stanchions are hinged together at the top (5) where the forward posts extend beyond the hinge to form a continuing handrail. Two platforms (7,8) are hinged to points on the front posts (9,10) where they replace steps. The lower platform has grooves (15) where it slides on pegs (16). on the rearward posts. The upper platform has bracing struts (11) connected to the lower platform and together they form a parallelogram. Consequently the platforms remain level while extended but fold flat against the ladder when not in use.
