Abstract

The exhaust pipe of a motor vehicle is made from lengths of stainless steel strip in which longitudinal corrugations (2) have been formed. Three similar strips are placed one upon the other so that the corrugations (2) interlock. The triple strip is then formed into a helix with the edges folded over to form a continuous spiral joint (3). The corrugations are formed by passing the strip between two suitably shaped rollers. The corrugations provide a flexible exhaust pipe which absorbs engine vibration and accommodates thermal expansion. The folded joint (3) is formed so that it is leaktight.
