Abstract

Gas-tight connection for drill pipes, used in deep wells, is produced by terminating the internally threaded part of the tool joint by a cylindrical plain bore, ending in a re-entrant taper face. The taper angle of the latter is 5-20% greater than the angle of the tapered face at the spigot end of a drill tube. The relative actual dias. of spigot end and of bore are such that a gap is left which is closed when the joint is tightened. This leaves greater tolerances for manufacturing accuracy without endangering the gas-tight seal. The danger of premature wear by friction or of fretting and damage is completely eliminated.
