Abstract

A process is described for the formation of surface diffusion alloys on metallic workpieces, esp. heat resisting materials operating in hot corrosive gases, e.g. turbine guide vanes having holes, in which the workpiece is kept from contact with the active mass by a permeable shield surrounding it. The shield is formed of a thin layer of a heat resisting felt formed from metallic, pref. tubular fibres. The felt is pretreated to form an alloy with 10-60 (pref. 25-50) % Cr and then selectively oxidised to form a Cr oxide layer on the fibres representing at least 5% of the felt wt. Felt-covered parts are embedded in a reaction mass, contg. the metal(s) for the surface alloy and in presence of an element reducing Cr oxide, belonging to the group, lanthanides, Al, Y, Ti, which can form halogenides in the H and halogen atmos. to reduce the Cr oxide, transforming it into a chemically inert protective layer.
