Abstract

Process to obtain diffused surface alloys on metal parts such as perforated turbine blades exposed to hot corrosive gases is claimed. The novelty is (1) mfr. of thin filters of refractory felt made of tubular metal fibres contg. 10-60%, pref. 25-50% Cr, oxidised to form 5% min. by wt. Cr2O3 on the fibres; (2) the metal parts are covered by the filters and subjected to hot powder diffusion in a halogen-H2 atmos., the powder contg. the metals to be diffused into the part plus at redn. agent consisting of Al, Y, Ti or lanthanides, and forming halide vapours reacting with the Cr2O3 to produce an inert and stable oxide film on the metals in the diffused coating. Used e.g. for powder coating perforated turbine blades, where the filters prevent the minute holes being blocked by the powder; and also prevent the powder sticking to the surface of the rotor or stator blades. The operating temp. of the blades is 1000-1300 degrees C.
