Abstract

Heat insulating shaped article for forming a layer in contact with a molten metal for metallurgical moulds, comprises a granular and/or fibrous refractory material, an exothermic combustible mixt., an oxidising agent and an (in)organic binder e.g. a resin such that the refractory material has a high opacity to IR and UV radiation and layer has a density 0.7 g/cc. The fibrous refractory material provides improved resistance to heat transmission due to its poor conduction of selected radiation together with reduction of density, itself reducing heat reduction.
