Abstract

Under sea low frequency acoustic waves are received by a hydrophone with a single cardioide shaped directive lobe. The hydrophone employs a single transducer and detects and locates buoys. The external envelope of the hydrophone comprises a cylindrical container (1) in which two main parts (1a, 1b) are separated by a rubber disc (13) of the same diameter as the container. The rear part (1a) contains an acoustic window (11) while the front part (1b) comprises a lateral face (8) separated from a base (4) by a circular window (5) to form a cavity. In front of the cavity is a flexing blade (2) piezoelectric transducer. Thin boundaries (6, 7) form thin blades of air (9, 10) in the lateral face and base to provide acoustic decoupling to ensure reception from the front only.
