Abstract

A metal rod adapted to be prosthetically inserted into an invalid's bone shank (e.g., the shank of a femur) has >=2 longitudinally extending depressions filled with a matl. that facilitates and promotes the renewal of bone cells. This matl. is surrounded by a metal grid whose mesh width is >=0.3 mm. and which is welded to the ribs of the metal rod extending between the depressions. Used e.g., is construction of hip bone prosthesis. A firm and reliable bond between prosthesis and natural bone is achieved but the resulting structure is not so compact that formation of blood vessels necessary for blood supply to the freshly growing bone tissue is prevented. Smooth surface of the metal improves resistance to corrosion. The metal grid may be a net of a perforated metal sheeting. It is impregnated (sic) with a biologically decomposable organic matl. adapted to facilitate growth of bone tissue. This matl. may be applied to the depression s by casting. The following matls. are suitable: polylactic acid, polyglycolic acid, a polylactide (I), a polyglycolide (II), tricalciumphosphate. Alternatively, biologically compatible mono- or poly-crystalline fibres, esp. carbon fibres, may be used.
