Abstract
Implantable metal peg made of Ti or a Ti alloy for fixing without an adhesive in a long bone for a joint prosthesis or to repair a bone. The peg has a layer of TiO2 for protection against long-time corrosion, followed by an outer protective layer contg. a glass which is biologically compatible with tissue and promotes the growth of bone tissue. Coating of TiO2 is pref. obtd. by anodic oxidn. of the Ti in a bath of H3PO4 also contg. boric acid, to form TiO2 500-4000(300-3500) angstroms thick. The glass in layer pref. contains 2-12 mole % P2O5, and has a coefft. of thermal expansion (CTE) the same as that of peg; layer pref. also contains alumina. Apart from compatibility and tissue growth promotion, the glass coating is completely impermeable to ions trying to leave the core.
