Abstract

The release mechanism for an acoustic buoy has a central pin (14) to which the parachute cord is attached. The spring (23) normally keeps the pin (14) in position, but when the parachute is deployed the spring force is overcome. The lower balls (43) are pushed radially outwards into the sleeve groove (41) and the pin slides upwards until the upper balls (42) drop into the upper groove (37) in the pin shaft. The pin then pulls the sleeve (15') upwards until it is held by the lower balls (43) wedged against the upper edge of the groove (41). When the buoy strikes the water the release of tension in the parachute cord allows the spring (23) to push the pin (14) down so that the lower balls fall into the lower groove of the pin, releasing the sleeve (15') so that the parachute is separated from the buoy.
