Abstract

Rolling steel bars starting from a square or four-edged billet, comprises the use of a roll stand contg. four rolls where the four roll peripheries form one roll gap through which the billet passes for the simultaneous redn. of the four corner regions of the billet along the diagonals to form a square section with sides joining the middle of adjacent sides of the original billet; this redn. is repeated several times to obtain the final cross section, using roll stands which contain four rolls possessing profiled peripheries which form the rolling gaps. The average redn. in the cross section of the workpiece is 20-50%, and either two or all four rolls in each stand may be driven. Higher yields with higher average redn. are obtd. in a smaller number of passes, producing high quality bar steel with a good surface.
