Abstract
Appts. for the magnetic testing of a moving sheet, comprises a hollow roller made of a material (I) with ferromagnetic properties. Inside the roller, near to the surface on which the sheet is stretched, are control devices responding to variations in a magnetic characteristic of the sheet. Material (I) has a magnetic permeability selected so that sufficient inductive coupling occurs between the sheet and the control devices to detect the variations in the magnetic characteristic. Material (I) pref. has max. magnetic permeability 1.5 mu, and is esp. stainless steel to specification ASTM 321. The control devices pref. consist of magnet yokes with 3 legs. Used for example, after cold rolling of continuous steel strip prior to coiling, for detecting local stresses, non-magnetic inclusions or fissures or scale.
