1,160,124. Electro-physical measurement - stress. BRITISH IRON & STEEL RESEARCH ASSOCIATION. Aug.22, 1967 [Aug.24, 1966], No.37947/66. Heading G1N. [Also in Division G3] Stress in sheet steel is determined by magnetic or electromagnetic tests of the field in the longitudinal and transverse directions e.g. to control a rolling mill with the object of avoiding uneven stress or wavy edges. The measurement may be made by the self inductance of pairs of coils on cross-shaped cores Fig. 1 (not shown), or the coupling between pairs of coils above and below the sheet Fig.2 (not shown), or Hall-plate or fluxgate magnetometers detecting the fields induced by a permanent magnet. A plurality of detectors may be arranged across the strip, or a single detector scanned transversely to determine the transverse stress-differencedistribution to control e.g. the screw down of a rolling mill or the rejection of faulty strips Fig. 9 (not shown).
