Abstract

1427703 Testing magnetic material BRITISH STEEL CORP 23 Feb 1973 [26 Nov 1971] 55052/71 Heading G1 In an arrangement for testing e.g. power loss in ferromagnetic strip material two arrays of spaced magnetic yokes are provided to reduce errors arising from eddy currents induced during testing in the strip. The sheet e.g. silicon bearing steel is passed through a central slot 8 in a hollow transverse member 6 in which is disposed a former 12 around which coaxial magnetizing solenoid 16 and sensing coil 18 are wound. Two arrays 20, 20' of yokes are provided adjacent each of the opposite faces of the sheet to complete the magnetic circuits including the sheet when solenoid 16 is A.C. energized. Due to the space 24 between the arrays 20, 20', which is greater than the distance between individual yokes, the magnetic circuits on either side of the space are isolated. This isolation produces a breakdown of eddy current induced in the sheet into a number of smaller independent circuits and reduces eddy current losses. The sensor coil 12 output and a signal representative of current flow in solenoid 16 are combined in a translation circuit to provide a visual indication of power losses and/or used to control the operating conditions of an annealing furnace. The translation circuit is also fed with a signal from a γ-ray sensor measuring the thickness of the sheet and a sensor measuring the width to weight the output of the sensing coil.
