Abstract

971,706. Determining magnetic properties. W.H.SCHLIEKER,[trading as WALZWERK NEVIGES WILLY H. SCHLIEKER & CO. ]. July 3, 1961 [July 2, 1960], No. 23999/61. Heading G1N. In a system in which the iron losses in a steel sheet or band 11, Fig. 1, passed through a magnetising winding 8 are periodically measured by a wattful current meter connected to a second winding 9 arranged concentrically with the winding 8. The A.C. voltage G1 applied to the winding 8 is regulated automatically in dependence on the thickness of the sheet through the intermediary of the measuring device 16 in order to obtain constant induction in the sheet independent of thickness. The device 16 is adjustable in the direction of movement of the sheet in accordance with the speed of travel of the sheet and may be located within the windings 8, 9, the arrangement being such that the part of the sheet at which the thickness is measured is correctly located within the winding at the moment of measurement. Supply G1 is regulated in accordance with the thickness through a moving coil device 20, Fig. 3, the spindle of which controls the spindle of two potentiometers 27a, 27b, the former of which serves to regulate the voltage applied to winding 8 whilst the latter maintains constant the voltage applied to winding 43 of the meter. Each potentiometer is provided with a contact 28 which is brought periodically into contact with the potentiometer by a magnet 31. The travelling sheet 11 is tested periodically and each test is initiated by a time switch and controlled by a cyclically operated chain of relays. When the first relay of the chain is pulled up it locks and energizes magnet 31 to close contacts 28. A slowacting relay is also operated to disconnect from the instrument 20 a further potentiometer (not shown) the purpose of which is to maintain the pointer 22 and the potentiometer wipers at a predetermined position during the interval between successive tests. The loss meter may provide recorded information; a record sheet being driven synchronously with the metal sheet. The device may be arranged to sort the sheets according to their iron loss values.
