Abstract
Purificn. of polluted liq. such as industrial effluent is by ion exchange treatment. A portable, ion exchange unit contg. a suitable resin is immersed directly in a tank of liq. to be treated, the liq. being pumped continuously in closed circuit from the tank, through the exchanger and back to the tank. When the resin in the exchanger is due for regeneration the exchanger is replaced with another exchanger charged with fresh resin and the first exchanger is taken away to a resin regeneration station, there is no interruption of the purificn. process. Using a constant delivery pump, the rate of flow of liq. through an exchanger is pref. controlled by means of an adjustable delivery by pass line returning liq. directly to the tank, or delivering treated liq. for further use, pref. via a filter. The regeneration station pref. comprises anionic, cationic, and demineralised water baths into which a set of exchangers can be lowered by mobile overhead lifting gear. The resin-loaded exchanger, is also claimed, pref. having a vertical cylindrical case with top connection for the closed circuit line and a liquid outlet at the bottom. Process is used for ion exchange treatment of industrial effluents partic. those from chemical and electrolytic processing plants such as surface treatment plants for metals. Process does not have to be interrupted while exchange resin is regenerated. Cartridge type exchangers are transported in containers for regeneration while stand by exchangers are put into use.
