Abstract

The application is to very heavy current homopolar machines of low or high speed, and eliminates the need for sealing or baffling arrangements to keep the liquid metal in place. The metal is in the gap between the stationary and rotating members of the contact assembly. Inserts of magnetic material are placed at each end of the gap and excited by current in windings concentric with the gap. The interaction between the primary magnetic field produced by the coils and the secondary fields set up by induced eddy currents in the liquid metal produces axial forces which hold the metal inside the gap.
