Abstract
The shock absorber has an outer casing with three pistons inside. A pyrotechnic charge is placed in the space between the two inner pistons. This is fired and the gases pass through holes to move the innermost piston rapidly inside the second and apply tension to the safety belt. The gases also pass through smaller holes onto the outer piston and hold this firmly. Reaction against belt tension breaks a shear bolt and operates spring loaded levers. These apply balls against an O ring and lock the inner pistons together. The gases are then used to absorb strain and shocks.
