Abstract

Compacted alloying addn. for molten Al consists of a mixt. of 97.5-99.9 wt.% powdered MnM Cr and/or Fe or Fe of particle size 0.25 mm, pref. 0.15 mm and in which >=30% in 0.05 mm, together with 0.1-2.5 wt.% non hygroscopic flux consisting of either KBF4 or K5Na3Ba2(-SiF6)6 and which is inactive at temps. below the liquids of al and which also has a m.ot. 788 degrees C. This mixt. may also contain Na silicate as a binder. In use the compacted mixt. is charged into an empty furnace with the al which is subsequently melted down. Alternatively the mixt. is added to the previously melted down Al. Rapid complete soln. of the alloying constituents is achieved as low as 693 degrees C.
