Abstract

Aromatic polycarboxylic acids are prepd. by oxidn. with gaseous O2 of aromatic org. cpds. contg. >=2 aliphatic side chains. The oxidn. is effected in liq. phase in presence of an oxidn. catalyst and an inert solvent. The appts. comprises a prim reactor and opt. other reactors, a distn. tower which receives at its base gases from the prim. reactor, heat exchanger which receives the overhead vapours from the distn. tower and a chamber where the condensate and the permanent gases from the exchanger are sepd. The condensate is (partly) recycled to the distn. tower and the permanent gases are either rejected to the atmosphere after eliminating traces of acetic acid or are recycled to the prim. reactor. Appts is partic. for oxidn. of paraxylene to terephthalic acid. Recovered heat from the exchanger can be used for heating various parts of the appts. where required.
