Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain an ester with little discoloration, at an accelerated reaction rate, by esterifying terephthalic acid or isophthalic acid with a glycol using a titanium dioxide catalyst heat-treated at a specific temperature range and having acidic points.
CONSTITUTION: In the esterification of terephthalic acid or isophthalic acid with a glycol of formula HO(CH2)nOH(n is 2W10), the esterification reaction can be remarkably accelerated and the discoloration of the product can be prevented by the use of a catalyst obtained by pretreating titanium dioxide having acidic points or an acidic mixture composed mainly of titanium dioxide, at 350W650°C. The titanium dioxide having acidic points is, e.g. titanium dioxide obtained by the hydrolysis of a titanium compound containing sulfuric acid group, and the acidic mixture is e.g. a mixture of ammonium sulfate and titanium dioxide obtained by the hydrolysis of a titanium compound free of sulfuric acid group.
