Abstract
Luminescent material consists essentially of a cpd. of formula XP5O14 (where X is a trivalent ion; or a mixt. of trivalent ions). It is used in cathode ray tubes, light emitting diodes, gas discharge tubes, i.r. quartum detectors, reinforces for X-ray images, electron microscopes, and devices for converting an i.r. image into a visible image; and gives images with a good resolution power, higher light power and shorter quenching time, e.g. 12 nanoseconds. It can be produced in the form of a solid matrix having inherent luminescent places, e.g. when X is Eu or Tb, or in the form of an inert matrix, e.g. when X is Y or Pr, contg. doping ions, e.g. Tm, Er, Eu or Tb ions. Materials having a wide range of properties can be produced. These show no reduction of the light emitting power when the concn. of active places is increased above a predefined value.
