Abstract

1336518 Luminescent materials TOKYO SHIBAURA ELECTRIC CO Ltd 11 July 1972 [16 July 1971] 32399/72 Heading C4S A phosphor material comprises a matrix of silicates of Lu and Y activated by trivalent Ce. The molar ratio of lutetium silicate to yttrium silicate is larger than 0À05 but smaller than or equal to 4. The phosphor exhibits short afterglow and luminesces from U.V. to shorter visible wavelengths as in the Fig. (not shown). Emission may be electrons or U.V., e.g. 3650Š and 2537Š. The phosphor material is prepared by mixing lutetium oxide, silicic anhydride and yttrium oxide with cerium compounds (e.g. cerous chloride, CeCl 3 .7H 2 O, hydroxide or nitrate), baking in a reducing or oxygen free atmosphere, followed by a second baking after quenching. Specific mixing proportions and baking temperatures and times are given. Carbon powders may be spread on the surface of the mixed mass during baking. Excitation by a 10 KV, 1 ÁA/cm<SP>2</SP>. electron beam is exemplified. Table II indicates peak luminescence and long wavelength limits. Lutetium oxide: yttrium oxide may be in the ratio 2x : 2(1-x) where x = 0À8, 0À6, 0À4, 0À2, 0À1, 0À05 for example, peak luminescence being as in Tables III and IV, as measured utilizing a photocathode response. Flying spot scanner and electronic video recording apparatus, fluoressent lamp and X-ray tube applications are exemplified.
