Abstract

In an antipollution barrier for use on the surface of water, partic. for confining petroleum, comprising (i) a float, pref. continuous, extending along the whole length of the barrier, the buoyancy of which can be varied to maintain it in a position at the surface of the water when in use or a position below the water surface when out of service (ii) a flexible, impermeable membrane which, in operation extends beyond the upper end of the float as well as downwards into the water, the float consists of two hollow elongated elements, pref. of the same form, while the flexible impermeable membrane consists of segments each of which is mounted detachably between the hollow elements. The barriers can be installed permanently at or around locations where oil spillage is most likely to occur, e.g. offshore oil prodn. and loading platforms, tanker loading and unloading sites, etc., and can thus be brought into use very quickly, but at other times can be sunk so that shipping is not impeded.
