Abstract

A machine for manipulating wine bottles in the champagne method of mfg. sparkling wines is claimed. A batch of bottles is stacked in a box type container, the longitudinal axes of the bottles in parallel arrangement with all necks towards the same end; the box is mounted to be rotated about two axes at right angles to each other as follows: (a) rotation through not less than 90 degrees about a horizontal, principal axis at right angles to the bottle axes so that they can be brought from the horizontal to the vertical, (b) complete rotation through 360 degrees about a secondary axis, at right angles the principal axis. Used for necking the sediment prior to ejection in the champagne method of mfg. sparkling wines. Automatic bottle manipulation replaces labour-intensive, skilled manual operation.
