Abstract

A refuse comminutor has a horizontal feed hopper with a chamber which reduces in cross section in the direction of feed, so that the refuse is held against a horizontally travelling side by side set of chains (11) with yoke shaped cutters (16) extending upwards from their links. The cutters grind the refuse against fixed cutter blocks (20) mounted on the inside of the casing, between the moving cutters. The drive is combined with an automatic or manually operated control system which reverses the feed in the event of blockage. A shock absorber system on a chain drive mounted on the side comprises a set of pivot arms carrying blocks at their ends which are forced down against the chain each side by a spring between them.
