Abstract

A vertical shaft rotates in mountings on the outside of the door and has radial arms at the top and bottom ends engaging in sockets so as to lock the door shut. A device (52) on the outside of the door prevents the shaft (44) from rotating and unlocking the door, and has a base bearing against the door and a screwed boss extending into it. A handle with a tapped hole screws onto the boss from inside the door, so that anyone inadvertently trapped inside can, by unscrewing the handle, thrust the locking device away from the door on the outside, thus releasing the locking arms and allowing the door to be opened.
