Abstract

The static switching of brushless electric motors has the switching derived from a magneto-resistance system detecting the position of the rotor(21) and controlling the current supply to the stator windings(22, 23, 24, 25) accordingly. The fixed sensor consists of two such magneto-resistance elements spaced apart and forming part of a resistance bridge. Current control is via a thyristor or triac switched d.c. supply the trigger or gate electrodes being fed from the sensor circuit. An amplifier(27) operating in a saturated mode may itself provide the stator winding supply and again be controlled from the sensor circuit, the sensor output is varied by a shaped magnetic element acting as an armature.
