Abstract

A backing sheet of paper, of which >=1 prod. from dil. solns. are to be deposited in separate straight lines, is wrapped round a cylinder the surface of which has grooves around the circumference that will be beneath the area on which the lines are deposited. The cylinder is rotated at constant speed and the dil. solns. is pumped by >=1 micropump or syringe driven by an endless screw and activated by an electric motor, at a constant rate through >=1 flexible pipe, the narrowed ends of which bring the soln. into contact with the backing paper. A discontinuous straight line is formed by a control component which automatically cuts the flow of dil. soln. for a predetermined time. The control components comprise a sliding contact moving on an annular ring on the axis of the revolving drum, parts of which are non-conducting and break an electrical contact in the supply to the electric motors thus interrupting the flow of liq. Since the supply is interrupted at the same points in each rotation the dil. soln. is only deposited every revolution on the same line. The deposited soln. is dried by continuously blowing hot air up the centre of the cylinder and through a perforated pipe around the circumference of the cylinder in the same plane as the line of deposition of soln. Used as distributor of samples, esp. for chromatography. Allows the automatic depositing of a concd. sample from a dil. soln.
