Abstract
Cemented optical systems mfr. or cementing of optical elements into housings, uses a cement of which the hardening is accelerated by exposure to a specific type of radiation, sufficient cement being applied to the joint surfaces so that projecting bulge of head of cement is formed on the edges of the parts or lenses being joined; the bead of cement is then exposed to source(s) of external radiation so that it hardens more rapidly than the layer of cement between the joint surfaces. Pref UV or IR radiation is employed with a bead which hardens by a chemical radical reaction, and repeated exposure can be used. High prodn. rate is possible because a lens system can immediately be inspected for optical alignment before the cement on the joint surfaces has hardened, and a new joint can easily be made if misalignment exists. The cement on the joint surfaces hardens slowly so that it is free from stresses.
