Abstract
Complementary surfaces of silicate glass optical lenses etc. are joined by producing on >= one of the joint surfaces having a surface finish better than 0.5 interference fringe, a film of SiO2 after which the surfaces are brough into optical contact and sintered together using infra red radiation of gradually increasing intensity. The SiO2 film is either produced by hydrolysis of SiCl4 vapour or by an alkali-acid etching method. The radiation intensity is a max 4 at places which are required to be completely transparent.
