Abstract
Ceramic material is obtd. from primary stone, partic. quarry rubble, contng. 40-85% SiO2 and 5-20% Al2O3 by wt. and having a melting point less than 1450 degrees C., by comminuting it to 20 mm., classifying into various particle sizes, selecting appropriate sizes or mixtures of sizes, forming to shape and firing at 1000-1250 degrees C. Pref. natural or synthetic colourants are added, possibly with red mud and/or shale ash, and/or clay. A microporous product may be obtained by subsequent grinding a 0.5 mm. stone fraction to 0.065 mm., followed by hot pressing and sintering to obtain maxium shrinkage. The process utilises waste stone material from quarries without itself producing waste products.
